Hipster Generation

Okay, so here's the deal... today's photos are inspired by a hilarious article I randomly stumbled upon, posted by WhyAmIHere (click here for original article).  Here is an excerpt from the article.

"The hipster is a fairly new trend which seems to have branched from the emo scene in the mid-2000s. They often claim to be liberal or nihilists, although very few partake in actual politics, as that would be too mainstream and also require too much work. They base much of what they do on irony and vilify people who do what society deems normal–i.e. going to college for something worthwhile, getting a job after graduating, and building a 401k. You can find the hipster wearing copious amounts of plaid or ironic t-shirts depicting alien abductions, classic book covers, or random sayings that bear no actual meaning. They drink craft beers, they move to big cities like Austin, Los Angeles, or Denver, and they grow facial hair that might as well have a sign on it begging people to look at them. When they do have a job, it is usually in a coffee shop, a local restaurant, or some kind of low-level entertainment job. They are a movement with no direction.
Hipsters usually have no ambition, contribute nothing to society (besides the few actually talented “indie” bands–looking at you Fitz and the Tantrums) and, most importantly, are capable of causing a certain hatred so deep in the guts of people like me that it makes us sick. This isn’t an unwarranted prejudice–they actively make the decision to be this way. I do not hate the specific hipsters I meet or know (except one, but that’s a long story). I merely despise their culture."
Turns out I caught one of these hipsters lounging in my living room, listening to his oversized headphones and hunching over an apple product, so had to snap a few pictures of the sighting...

Beyond The Sea | Part 1 |

A couple of weeks ago, I had the opportunity to photograph an assortment of cuteness made from Birch Fabrics' latest collection, "Beyond The Sea" by Jay-Cyn Designs.  The model was none other than my beautiful daughter, and the quilt was sewn up by my talented friend Arleen Hillyer.  The pillows and octopus were sewn up by the very talented Ashley Miller with patterns by Melissa Lunden.  The top was also made by Ashley Miller with the pattern by See Kate Sew.

North Of The Rock | Part II |

I had a few more gems in my roll from our trip to Morro Rock Beach last week, and apparently I was feeling a bit more colorful this time around.  I just really liked the feel of this not-so-subtle split tone.  The split tome just reminds me of something you'd see in the inside cover of a surf mag, or hanging in a Morro Bay coffee shop perhaps.  Whatever the reason, this mini-set of photos is a bit more colorful and playful than the last.

North Of The Rock

Yesterday I did a photoshoot at the north end of Morro Rock, but while I am not at liberty to share those photos, I did take the opportunity to snag a few shots of my own once the shoot was done.  It was a gorgeous evening, and I could have sat there watching my kids run and wade out into the ocean for much longer, if only the sun would have agreed to just hang out on the horizon for an extra hour or so... alas, we had no such luck.  How blessed am I to live in such a beautiful place?!

Warped People

I had a great time at the Vans Warped Tour this year in Ventura, taking the opportunity to meet all kinds of new people and to snap a few pictures of the colorful crowd while I was at it.  Nothing beats having a camera in your hand when you find yourself surrounded by thousands of interesting, inspiring, and beautiful people, and the live music blasting at you from every direction was the icing on the cake of an incredible day!  This was a first for me, photography-wise... see, I could look at street photography blogs all day long, but when it comes to actually doing it, I have always felt to awkward to even try, at least until I went to Warped Tour.  Everyone here was dressed to impress with outfits and body art that screamed, "Look at me!  Take photos of me!"  Who was I to argue?  It was fun to take pictures of so many different people in one day, but even more fun than that was meeting and chatting with so many new people in one day.  In case you were wondering, it turns out most complete strangers are pretty cool with someone just walking up, aiming their camera at them, and firing away.  I highly recommend it.  So here are some of my favorite photos of the "Warped People" I met at the Vans Warped Tour.

Shawn Clark Family Band

God called Shawn Clark out of the Lone Star State, and blessed our beautiful Central Coast with the inspirational sound known as the Shawn Clark Family Band - and thank God He did!  I had the pleasure of watching them live last night, and I snapped a few photos to prove it.  The guys were friendly, funny, and generous, even giving me a copy of their new album "Tumbleweed" which I listened to last night, and highly recommend.  You can get your own copy or just listen to some tunes on their website.

An Old Favorite Revised

This is one of my favorite photos I've ever taken.  The main reason for this is because it came from the first professional photoshoot I ever did.  I had just injured myself and was forced to drop out of Fire Academy.  I had no idea what I was going to do for work, but my wife needed a photographer, and my schedule was wide open.  The shoot was to promote Birch Fabrics' new substrate Double Gauze, and the Birch Gals whipped up this dress for Brenda to model.  I had always loved messing around with a camera, but I didn't think of myself as particularly talented, and I certainly had never been payed to take photos.  I felt timid, hesitant, unsure, doubting myself, and leaning on my wife heavily (she was directing the shoot), but I still remember the empowering feeling that came over me while looking at the photos after the shoot:  I thought, 'Yeah... I could see this in a magazine'.  When I first started, I had a habit of over-editing and tweaking everything to no end, just because it was fun to mess around with photoshop and learn new skills.  Well, I recently found the original RAW image and decided to start on an 'alternate edit', and I am very pleased with the revised composition and color.  This new edit speaks to me in a much different way than the original.  It is a more mature edit with absolutely no photoshop.  There is a lot to be said for composition and subtle color adjustments.  Comparing this edit to the initial edit makes me proud of what I've learned on my photography journey!

Sumo Cyco | Vans Warped Tour

I was exposed to a whole lot of new music at Vans Warped Tour this year, but the most inspiring new band I had the pleasure of seeing was Sumo Cyco!  These Canucks shook and opened a monster-sized can of aggressive rock all over the stage.  They even brought the show out into the audience at one point, and I was able to get a few up close and personal shots of the green-haired front-lady.  Here are a few of my favorite shots from the show!
